CrossFit in Weston-super-Mare

CrossFit at Oxhouse, Weston-super-Mare

CrossFit at Oxhouse combines strength training, conditioning, gymnastics and functional movement in coached sessions that are different every day but programmed to help you make measurable progress over time. Whether you've trained for years or you're walking into a gym for the first time, you do the same class as everyone else — but at the level that's right for you.

What Is CrossFit?

CrossFit is a strength and conditioning programme built on constantly varied, functional movements performed at high intensity. Each workout — or "WOD" (Workout of the Day) — combines elements of cardio, weightlifting, gymnastics and bodyweight training to build all-round fitness.

CrossFit combines:

  • ›Strength training — squats, deadlifts, presses, Olympic weightlifting
  • ›Gymnastics & bodyweight movement — pull-ups, push-ups, rowing, carries and more
  • ›Cardiovascular fitness — running, bikes, rowing, ski erg and similar conditioning work
  • ›Functional movement — movements that develop strength and fitness that transfer into everyday life
  • ›Varied workouts — while still sitting within structured programming designed to create progression

At Oxhouse, every CrossFit class is coach-led. Our coaches demonstrate each movement, guide you through the warm-up, and adjust the workout to match your ability. Your training follows structured programming written in-house, based around our specific members, and designed to develop strength, fitness, movement quality and capacity over time. Whether it's your first day or your fifth year, the session is scaled to challenge you safely.

CrossFit at Oxhouse isn't about being the fittest person in the room. It's about being fitter than you were yesterday — with a community that cheers you on every step of the way.

What to Expect in a CrossFit Class

Every session follows a structured format designed to keep you safe, engaged and progressing.

01

Guided Warm-Up

Every class starts with a coach-led warm-up — mobility, activation and preparation.

02

Skill & Strength

Focused time to build technique and strength under expert supervision.

03

The WOD

The main workout — constantly varied, fully scalable, and built to challenge you.

04

Cool-Down & Feedback

Structured cool-down with coach feedback on your session and progress.

05

Fist Bumps All Around

Every class ends with fist bumps — because finishing together matters. That's the Oxhouse way.

Is CrossFit Suitable for Beginners?

Yes — absolutely. CrossFit is designed to be universally scalable, which means anyone can start, regardless of their current fitness level. You don't need to be fit before you walk through the door. You just need to walk through the door.

You don't need to be fit to start
Every workout is coached, step by step
All movements scale to your ability
No one is watching or judging you
Support is built into everything we do

What "scaling" actually looks like

If today's workout includes running, pull-ups and a barbell movement, one experienced member might run the full distance, perform pull-ups and use a heavier barbell. Someone in their first week might use the bike, do ring rows and lift a lighter weight.

You're both doing the same workout and training toward the same intended outcome — just at the appropriate level for you. That's what we mean by "everything can be scaled."

CrossFit vs HYROX: What's the Difference?

If you're weighing up CrossFit and HYROX, the most useful question isn't really about the format — it's about outcomes. If I train CrossFit, how will my results be different from HYROX?

CrossFit develops a broader range of physical abilities.

You'll spend more time developing:

  • ›Absolute strength
  • ›Power
  • ›Olympic weightlifting
  • ›Gymnastics and bodyweight skills
  • ›Mobility and movement quality
  • ›Short, intense conditioning
  • ›Longer aerobic fitness
  • ›Coordination and technical skill

Over time you might find yourself doing things you couldn't previously imagine — lifting significantly heavier weights, doing pull-ups, climbing ropes, handstands, box jumps or more advanced movements.

HYROX is more specialised.

HYROX training is centred much more closely around the demands of a HYROX race: running combined with eight fixed functional workout stations such as the SkiErg, sled push, sled pull, burpee broad jumps, rowing, farmers carries, sandbag lunges and wall balls.

So HYROX training will generally place a greater emphasis on:

  • ›Running endurance
  • ›Sustained cardiovascular fitness
  • ›Muscular endurance
  • ›Pacing
  • ›Becoming efficient at the specific HYROX stations

The simple answer.

Choose CrossFit if: you want to become stronger and fitter across the broadest possible range of abilities, enjoy learning new skills and want training that continually develops with you.

Choose HYROX if: you particularly enjoy running and endurance training, want to prepare for a HYROX event, or prefer training around a consistent set of movements.

Choose both if: you want the best of both worlds. Plenty of Oxhouse members use CrossFit to build their overall strength and athleticism while also attending HYROX sessions to develop the specific running, pacing and muscular endurance needed for racing.

You don't necessarily have to choose — and that's one of the massive advantages of coming to Oxhouse over any other gym in Weston-super-Mare. We're the only gym where you can train both under the same roof, with coaches who understand how to balance the two.

Why Oxhouse?

We're the only CrossFit gym in Weston-super-Mare. That's not a boast — it's a responsibility. When you're the only gym using the CrossFit methodology, every session has to count.

Oxhouse has been running for 13 years, and our programming reflects that. It's elite-level training built on real experience — progressive, periodised, and designed to produce measurable results over time, not just leave you sweating for the sake of it.

Between our coaches, we have decades of combined experience. They've trained beginners taking their first step into a gym and athletes competing at the highest level. Every one of them is here to make sure you move well, train smart, and walk out better than you walked in.

You won't find a sauna, an ice bath, or a dedicated recovery lounge at Oxhouse. We've nothing against them — they're just not what makes people fitter. What we do invest in is coaching, programming, and a training routine that genuinely improves you over time. No fads, no gimmicks, no hiding behind the latest trend. Just hard work that works.

Real Members, Real Stories

They Started Where You Are

"I'd tried other gyms but never stuck with them. This place is different. The coaches know your name, they actually care, and I've made more progress in three months than I did in three years before."

Oxhouse member for 2 years

"I spent £400/month on personal training and saw less progress than my first 3 months at Oxhouse. The programming is intelligent, the coaching is attentive, and somehow it costs a fraction of what I was paying."

Oxhouse member for 1 year

"It's the community that keeps me coming back. I've made genuine friends here. We celebrate each other's wins, pick each other up on hard days. It's not just training — it's belonging."
