HYROX Training at Oxhouse, Weston-super-Mare

Whether you want to try the HYROX style of training, prepare for your first race or beat your previous time, our coached sessions combine running, strength and functional fitness to help you make measurable progress — adapted to your current fitness and ability.

What Is HYROX?

HYROX is a fitness race that combines running with eight functional workout stations. Every race follows the same overall format: eight 1km runs, each followed by a different workout station. Because the race format is consistent, HYROX training can be highly specific. You can improve your running, pacing, strength and efficiency at each station, then put those elements together so you perform better under fatigue.

CrossFit versus HYROX: What's the Difference?

If you're weighing up HYROX and CrossFit, the most useful question isn't really about the format — it's about outcomes. If I train HYROX, how will my results be different from CrossFit?

HYROX is more specialised.

HYROX training is centred much more closely around the demands of a HYROX race: running combined with eight fixed functional workout stations such as the SkiErg, sled push, sled pull, burpee broad jumps, rowing, farmers carries, sandbag lunges and wall balls.

So HYROX training will generally place a greater emphasis on:

  • ›Running endurance
  • ›Sustained cardiovascular fitness
  • ›Muscular endurance
  • ›Pacing
  • ›Becoming efficient at the specific HYROX stations

CrossFit develops a broader range of physical abilities.

You'll spend more time developing:

  • ›Absolute strength
  • ›Power
  • ›Olympic weightlifting
  • ›Gymnastics and bodyweight skills
  • ›Mobility and movement quality
  • ›Short, intense conditioning
  • ›Longer aerobic fitness
  • ›Coordination and technical skill

Over time you might find yourself doing things you couldn't previously imagine — lifting significantly heavier weights, doing pull-ups, climbing ropes, handstands, box jumps or more advanced movements.

The simple answer.

Choose HYROX if: you particularly enjoy running and endurance training, want to prepare for a HYROX event, or prefer training around a consistent set of movements.

Choose CrossFit if: you want to become stronger and fitter across the broadest possible range of abilities, enjoy learning new skills and want training that continually develops with you.

Choose both if: you want the best of both worlds. Plenty of Oxhouse members use CrossFit to build their overall strength and athleticism while also attending HYROX sessions to develop the specific running, pacing and muscular endurance needed for racing.

You don't necessarily have to choose — and that's one of the massive advantages of coming to Oxhouse over any other gym in Weston-super-Mare. We're the only gym where you can train both under the same roof, with coaches who understand how to balance the two.

Got Questions?

Frequently Asked Questions

No, you don't need to be fit before starting HYROX. Most people can't run 8km, push a competition-weight sled or complete every HYROX movement before joining a session, but that's exactly what you join Oxhouse for. Your coach can adapt running distances, weights, movement variations and overall volume so that you can work at the right level for you while still developing the fitness the session is designed to train. As your fitness improves, your training develops with you.

No, you don't need to enter a HYROX race. Some members train with a specific race date in mind, but others simply enjoy the combination of running, strength and functional fitness. HYROX-style training is an effective way to build cardiovascular fitness, muscular endurance and overall work capacity even if you never plan to compete.

With consistent HYROX training, you can expect to improve your running fitness, cardiovascular endurance, strength, muscular endurance, pacing, movement efficiency and ability to keep working while fatigued. If you're racing, those improvements can translate into a stronger and more controlled performance on race day. If you're not racing, they simply make you fitter and more capable.

Yes, HYROX training can help with all of those areas. It combines cardiovascular exercise and resistance training, which can support fat loss and improvements in body composition. However, we don't promise a particular number on the scales. Changes in body composition are also influenced by nutrition, sleep, recovery and overall activity levels — all of which we can advise you on and work on with you. Our focus is on helping you become fitter, stronger and more capable rather than chasing a specific weight.

Yes, HYROX is suitable for beginners. You don't need any previous HYROX, CrossFit or functional fitness experience to start training at Oxhouse. Your coach will help you choose the appropriate running distances, weights and movement variations for your current ability. The goal isn't to prove how fit you already are — it's to help you become fitter.

How often you should train for HYROX depends on your current fitness, experience and whether you have a race coming up. For many people, a combination of HYROX-specific sessions, strength training and additional running works well. If you're preparing for an event, your training may become more specific as race day gets closer. Oxhouse coaches can help you understand how HYROX sessions fit alongside the rest of your training.

Yes, you can do HYROX and CrossFit together. In fact, they can complement each other extremely well. CrossFit can help develop strength, power and broader athletic ability, while HYROX-specific training develops the running, pacing and muscular endurance required for the race. Many Oxhouse members use both depending on their goals.

Why Oxhouse?

We're the only CrossFit gym in Weston-super-Mare. That's not a boast — it's a responsibility. When you're the only gym using the CrossFit methodology, every session has to count.

Oxhouse has been running for 13 years, and our programming reflects that. It's elite-level training built on real experience — progressive, periodised, and designed to produce measurable results over time, not just leave you sweating for the sake of it.

Between our coaches, we have decades of combined experience. They've trained beginners taking their first step into a gym and athletes competing at the highest level. Every one of them is here to make sure you move well, train smart, and walk out better than you walked in.

You won't find a sauna, an ice bath, or a dedicated recovery lounge at Oxhouse. We've nothing against them — they're just not what makes people fitter. What we do invest in is coaching, programming, and a training routine that genuinely improves you over time. No fads, no gimmicks, no hiding behind the latest trend. Just hard work that works.
